IMO Background

World Maritime Day was established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping. First observed in 1978, the day highlights the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the marine environment, while emphasizing the vital role of the global maritime transport system in supporting sustainable economic growth.

Each year, maritime nations around the world host commemorative events to honour the people and institutions that keep global trade moving, while reaffirming their commitment to international maritime standards.

Event Overview: South Africa 2026

In 2026, South Africa will celebrate World Maritime Day 2026 in KuGompo under the national theme: From Policy to Practice, Powering Maritime Excellence.

The event will be hosted at the Premier Hotel Regent, this premier one-day event will bring together government leaders, industry stakeholders, educators, and young people to translate maritime policy into practical action and measurable progress.

Day 1: 16 September 2026 – Youth and Skills Development: An immersive port tour for school learners, designed to introduce them to maritime careers, port infrastructure, and opportunities within the ocean economy.

Day 2: 17 September 2026 – Main Celebration and Plenary: A programme of high-level keynote addresses, panel discussions, and exhibitions showcasing how South Africa’s maritime policies support economic growth, port efficiency, environmental stewardship, and skills development.
